Estonia finds pilot negligence in AMRAAM launch incident

Estonia has concluded an investigation into the accidental firing of an AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) by a Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon in Estonian airspace on 7 August 2018. Nobody was reported killed or injured in theincident.

The investigation, carried out by the Estonian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and civilian agencies under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and the results of which were published on 21 February, found that the air-to-air missile was accidentally fired because of the Spanish pilot’s failure to comply with safety regulations and not by a systems error.

The Spanish Air Force’s internal investigation carried out in 2018 reached the same conclusion, finding pilot negligence to be the cause of the incident.
