News has emerged of a Russian-Egyptian deal, which concerns the supply of at a squadron of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter aircraft of Russian manufacture after ordering two squadrons of MiG -29 fighters (MiG-35 according to other sources). The introduction into the East Mediterranean security equation of a very capable fighter aircraft could be described as a “game changer”.
Russia and Egypt have therefore signed a $ 2 billion contract for the supply of dozens of multi-role Su-35 fighters, which will significantly increase the strength of the Egyptian Air Force fleet.
The fact that Egypt has signed an agreement for the supply of Su-35 fighters, was featured in the Russian business newspaper “Kommersant” which quoted two top business executives of the Russian defense industry.
According to their statements, the relevant agreement on the offer of 24 [according to some sources] of the Su-35 fighter aircraft to be built at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant came into force at the end of 2018, with the first deliveries being scheduled for the period 2020-2021. One of the sources pointed out that the capabilities of the production line allow the company to produce 20 more aircraft of the type in the period 2019-2020 to meet the needs of the Russian Air Force.
In recent years, Egypt is one of the largest buyers of a wide range of Russian weapons and military equipment. This activity is directly linked to President al-Sisi, who came to power in Egypt during the coup in 2013 and quickly realized the real need of the army for massive renewal of the material it uses.
Prior to the agreement with Egypt, two Su-35 contracts were announced: in November 2015, an agreement was signed with China on the supply of 24 Su-35 fighter aircraft (a $ 2 billion contract ending in late 2018), and in 2018, the sale agreement of 11 Su-35 with Indonesia. The contract is estimated at $ 1.1 billion, of which about half will be paid by providing “non-military” products.
