Bundeswehr’s Leopard 2 MBT to be upgraded to the latest A7V version

Bundestag’s Budget Committee approved two budget requests worth more than 25 million euros submitted by the Federal Ministry of Defense, with a total value of around 428 million euros, regarding the upgrade of the Leopard 2 MBT fleet and the procurement of new projectiles for PzH 200 self-propelled howitzer.

All Bundeswehr procurement projects whose total volume exceeds 25 million euros have to be approved separately by the Budget Committee, although they are included and approved in the federal budget.

Regarding the 101 Leopard 2 main battle tank A6M A2 and A6 variants the plan is to be upgraded to the latest Leopard 2 A7V version in order to standardize the fleet to achieve economies of scale in terms of operational costs and logistic support.

The modernization of the main battle tanks should be completed by 2026. Among other things, the Leopard 2 will receive a new target system, new radios and modified fire control computers.

The Budget Committee also gave the green light for the procurement of around 32,000 rounds in 155 mm caliber for the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer. The munitions will be received by the German Army in eight lots and will have to be completed by 2023.
