UK cuts total MBT’s by a third

Defence experts have voiced concerns that Britain is set to mothball one-third of its Challenger 2 tanks.

The British Army will revamp just 148 of its 227 main battle tank, leaving the UK worse off in terms of armoured vehicles than Cambodia, Serbia and Burma, The Times reported.

Financial constraints mean Britain would plummet from 48th in the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ global ranking of tank numbers down to 56th, according to reports.

It is expected the remaining models could be used for parts, though it said that some tanks could be patched up for deployment in an emergency.
