North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un inspected a new submarine, paying close attention to its weapons systems, a week after Pyongyang warned against the upcoming joint South Korean and US military drills.
The submarine will be deployed in the East China Sea, also called the Sea of Japan, the official North Korean KCNA agency reported, without giving any further details of its weapon systems or site of inspection.
“The Supreme Leader has been informed of all the details of the operational and regular data (of the submarine) and its weapons system,” the agency added.
North Korea has a large fleet of submarines, but only one of them is known to be capable of carrying ballistic missiles.
A South Korean defense ministry spokesman pointed out that Seoul is closely following developments, but can not confirm that this submarine was designed to carry missiles.
