Royal Navy selects Babcock Team 31 for new frigate

The Babcock Team 31 was selected by the British Department of Defense for the T31  general mission frigate program. The program involves the construction of five vessels at an average cost of £ 250m per unit. The new Arrowhead 140 frigates will be launched in 2023.

The program will employ around 1,250 skilled workers, while supporting many more. Construction work will begin immediately upon completion of the formal procedures. Design work will begin now and shipbuilding will begin in 2021 and be completed in 2017.

The Arrowhead 140 frigates (Type 31) will provide the Royal Navy with new technology vessels capable of carrying a multitude of missions. The aim is also to promote exports with a lucrative selling price and flexibility in ship armaments and equipment.

The vessels are designed to operate with a small crew and have all the new technologies. Thales also participates in the program. The vessels will have Thales’ Tacticos battle management system.
