Turkish fishermen netting in Greek territorial waters

Even a few hundred meters off the coast of the Greek islands Turkish fishermen ply their nets in the Aegean, according to Greek fishermen speaking to SKAI television. Greek fishermen complain that Turkish vessels are depleting the fish stock in the area.

Videos and testimonies show that in some cases Greek boats pursue Turkish fishing boats. Sometimes Turkish ships are concentrated in the same spot. Violations take place throughout the year.

In the northern Aegean and Thracian segments the proportion is five Turkish vessels for each Greek. Samothrace Mayor Nikos Galatoumos told the TV station that many Turkish boats are massive and are using their displacement to do dangerous maneuvers that endanger human lives. Legally documented solutions are being developed by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
