Pentagon chief: US and allies will respond to the attacks on Aramco

The United States is working with its allies to respond to recent drone attacks on oil facilities and to defend international order against Iran, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said.

“The United States military, with our interagency team, is working with our partners to address this unprecedented attack and defend the international rules-based order that is being undermined by Iran,” he said in a tweet.

Pentagon officials, Esper added, briefed President Donald Trump at the White House. Esper also had a conversation with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Earlier, Trump told reporters that it “looked” like Iran was behind the attacks.

On Saturday, two Saudi Arabian oil facilities were attacked, with Yemen’s Houthi fighters claiming responsibility. The US has blamed Iran for the attacks, with Tehran denying the allegations.

Although the Houdis, who fight the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, admitted they had carried out the attack, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed, without providing evidence, that Iran was the real culprit.
