Hellenic Navy transfers migrants from Symi to Piraeus

A Hellenic Navy LST ferried about 500 refugees and immigrants from the island of Symi. The migrants had arrived by boat from the opposite Turkish coast.

The presence of refugees and immigrants had caused many problems, since there were no basic facilities for their accommodation on the island, with most of them having camped outside the police station and Port Authority on central roads and points of the island.

There were strong protests on the part of the Mayor of Symi Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas regarding the situation. Finally, last night, after consulting with the relevant ministries, a Hellenic Navy LST sailed to the island with a and began boarding people to be transferred to Piraeus.

Refugee and migrant accommodation in the islands of Leros and Kos is also problematic, as the number of refugees and immigrants has increased significantly in recent years.
