Egyptian security forces killed 83 suspected jihadists in operations they carried out last month in central and northern Sinai, the armed forces said. The statement does not identify the Islamist militants or the organizations to which they belonged.
The armed forces also report that 61 suspects were arrested and 376 explosive devices found and neutralized during this period. One officer and two soldiers were killed or injured, the statement added without further clarification.
According to the Egyptian Armed Forces, hundreds of Islamist militant have been killed since the army launched a major campaign in February 2018 aimed at defeating the Islamic State and its affiliated jihadist organizations in the Sinai peninsula. The armed forces announce the deaths sporadically.
The Sinai organization, affiliated with the Islamic State, has sworn allegiance to the organization’s new leader after the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the organization said in a telegram message exchange Saturday.
