European Product Carriers LTD confirms piracy incident involving its tanker ‘Elka Aristotle’

Ship-owner European Product Carriers LTD released a statement late afternoon on Monday confirming and acknowledging the piracy incident involving one of its tankers.

“We regret to confirm that an incident occurred involving “ ELKA ARISTOTLE” off Lome, Togo on 4 November 2019. This resulted in the kidnap of 4 crew members. We cannot comment in detail at the present time, except to say that the safety and security of our people is of paramount importance to us and we are doing everything we can to ensure their prompt and safe release. The vessel and remaining crew are safe. We would ask the media to respect both the sensitive nature of the situation and the privacy of the crew members’ families during this difficult time,” reads the company’s full statement.

Gunmen abducted four men – a Greek, two Filippinos and a Georgian national who were part of the tanker’s crew of 24.

Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis was informed immediately and ordered the competent authorities to closely monitor developments concerning the tanker, in cooperation with the foreign ministry and the shipping company handling the vessel.
