Turkish authorities have armed groups of rebels who control Syrian territory with German-made tanks, according to a report published yesterday by the authoritative German magazine Bild. According to the report, the Turkish authorities handed over German-made Leopard-2 tanks to the self-styled “National Syrian Army” (SNA).
According to Bild magazine, Turkish-backed armed rebel groups operating in northern Syria have used Leopard-2 tanks against the Syrian Democratic Army (SDF) in the past.
According to a correspondent for the German magazine, the armed groups backed by Ankara have admitted that they have used such tanks in their operations. A typical spokesman said: “Turkey supplied us with military equipment, including tanks.”
The Turkish military has been using German Leopard-2 tanks since 2016 and has long been supplying armed military groups fighting against Assad.
