Contract for acquisition of 15 new Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boats

A contract for the acquisition of 15 high-speed patrol boats, with an option for adding three more at a total cost 33,780,000 euros, was signed on Wednesday by Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis and respresentatives of the contractor firms “F B Design S.R.L” and “Electronica Marittima S.R.L”.

The delivery of the vessels will start in October 2020 and will be completed in the second half of 2023.

The project is funded by two separate financing instruments, the Operational Programme for Fisheries and Maritime 2014-2020 and by the EU Internal Security Fund’s special action for equipping the border agency Frontex, which aims to increase the operational capabilities of the Greek Coast Guard.

The FB 56 was the last vessel designed by the late Fabio Buzzi who was killed in a boating accident in Venice, last year. The FB 56 has full offshore operational capability at sea state 5 and survivability at least up to sea state 7. Its maximum speed is over 50 knots, while economy cruising speed can be maintained at 40 knots.

The ship’s bridge is fitted with a standard STANAG 4569 anti-ballistic shield in accordance with NATO Level 2 standards and includes a full range of modern communications equipment including satellite, HF, VHF and UHF, A2 and GMDSS NAVTEX, AIS (Automatic Identification System) – Secure Mode, etc. FB 56 is equipped with optical and thermal system to detect, identify and target surface targets, imaging, capable of visually detecting 5 × 5 m targets at 23 km and humans at 7.5 km, with a built-in Laser Class-1 (EYESAFE) with a range of more than 10 km. Additionally, a portable thermal military specification camera MIL-STD-810 for tracking people more than 2 km with 4x optical zoom. The vessel has a Naval Radar ‘X’ Band (ARPA) capable of imaging 100 targets simultaneously.

The vessel propulsion system includes 2 Scania Marine Engines Type DI16 076M Main Engines, 809KW (1100Hp) Power, 2 ZF 500 Reducers, 2 ZF Trimax 3200 I axle and boat control systems, and 2 supercavitating propellers.

The FB 56 is designed to carry bow and deck mounts for M2HB-QCB 12,7x99mm (cal 0.50΄΄) heavy machine guns, interchangeable with 7.62x51mm NATO FN-MAG 58 or MG-3 light machine gun, along with ammunition boxes. Level 3 shields (NATO 7.62x51mm shotgun) ensure the safety of gun operators. The boats will be delivered with a 4 year warranty, both for the boat and their equipment. Scheduled maintenance and technical support for the vessels, as well as all of their equipment, including all required spare parts, materials and work, are also provided for the same period.
